According to Mark Shuttleworth, Canonical is moving quickly ahead with its plans to bring Ubuntu to platforms going well beyond just desktop computers. In his latest blog post, Shuttleworth notes: “We’ll show Ubuntu neatly integrated into Android at Mobile World Congress next week. Carry just the phone, and connect it to any monitor to get a full Ubuntu desktop with all the native apps you want, running on the same device at the same time as Android. Magic. Everything important is shared across the desktop and the phone in real time.”

You can watch a video of Ubuntu for Android in action here, and this latest move falls in line with Canonical’s increasing efforts to find new platforms for Ubuntu.

Shuttleworth makes a few clarifications in his post:

“This isn’t the ‘Ubuntu Phone.’ The phone experience here is pure Android. This announcement is playing to a different story, which is the convergence of multiple different form factors into one most-personal device. Naturally, the most personal device is the phone, so we want to get all of these different personalities – phone, tablet and desktop – into the phone. When you need a desktop, you connect up to a screen and a keyboard. When you need a tablet, you dock to some very elegant glass.”

The really big news for some, though, is that Canonical has wrapped Ubuntu TV into Ubuntu for Android. At the CES show in Las Vegas earlier this year, Canonical showed off Ubuntu TV, as we reported here. It’s a new interface that integrates television and movie content on an open source platform that Canonical hopes will win developers over, and it’s clearly meant to have a future on smartphones.

We’ll follow up with more on Ubuntu for Android as Mobile World Congress kicks off in Barcelona next week. The conference should be loaded with mobile technology announcements.

In a move that may seriously irk users of Firefox and many other browsers on Linux, Adobe has announced that it has partnered with Google on a "modern API for hosting plugins within the browser" and Flash Player for Linux, effectively requiring that Linux users use Google Chrome if they want updated versions of Flash.

In a move that may seriously irk users of Firefox and many other browsers on Linux, Adobe has announced that it has partnered with Google on a “modern API for hosting plugins within the browser” and Flash Player for Linux, effectively requiring that Linux users use Google Chrome if they want updated versions of Flash. The new API, “Pepper,” “aims to provide a layer between the plugin and browser that abstracts away differences between browser and operating system implementations,” says Adobe. Pepper will effectively replace the Netscape plug-in API that Flash Player currently uses, but Mozilla has made it abundantly clear that it is not interested in working with Pepper at all.

In a terse posting on Mozilla’s wiki, the following lines appear:

“Mozilla is not interested in or working on Pepper at this time. See the Chrome Pepper pages.”

That’s it? Nearly 80 percent of the video content on the web is Flash. What will users of Firefox on Linux do regarding updated versions of Flash?

Adobe does say in its announcement that it “will continue to provide security updates to non-Pepper distributions of Flash Player 11.2 on Linux for five years from its release,” but the Chrome-only future for true Flash updates on Linux seems clear in this part of the announcement:

“For Flash Player releases after 11.2, the Flash Player browser plugin for Linux will only be available via the ‘Pepper’ API as part of the Google Chrome browser distribution and will no longer be available as a direct download from Adobe.”

Here’s the real rub: Adobe will continue to support non-Pepper plug-in APIs on other major platforms–just not Linux. This seems like a slap in the face to the Linux community, and isn’t the first time Adobe has popped up with such a heavy-handed move. Ironically, the Chrome browser was originally based on contributions from the Linux-focused team at Canonical. Now, Chrome is going to be the required gatekeeper if you want updated Flash on Linux. Go figure.

Black Duck Software’s Olliance Group and DLA Piper have now announced core sponsors for the upcoming Open Source Think Tank 2012 conference. Adobe, Global Inventures, HP, Motorola, SAP and SugarCRM are all among the sponsors of the seventh annual conference, which promises to have some interesting keynotes and sessions. What’s more the event takes place in April, in Napa, California–one of the more beautiful locations for a conference. Interested attendees need to apply for invitations, which you can do here.

“Open source, cloud and mobile technologies are an important path to innovation for SAP,” said Claus von Riegen, Vice President Industry Standards and Open Source, SAP, in a statement. “As we expand our use of open source to shorten development cycles while increasing new product innovation, this interchange of ideas and solutions becomes increasingly important. What happens at Think Tank influences how we think at SAP.”

“The theme of this year’s Think Tank inspired our decision to sponsor this event,” added Deepak Kamlani, CEO Global Inventures. “Global Inventures is focused on expanding innovation and collaboration via global multi-stakeholder collaboration, across multiple industry sectors. Think Tank is providing valuable focus on the strategic implications of OSS — its importance to the technology ecosystem is undeniable.”

Industry-driven community innovation is one of the core themes of the Think Tank conference this year, and the conference will feature an involved case study presented by the Genivi Alliance. As we’ve reported, the Genivi Alliance is doing some very innovative work to integrate open source technologies with cars.

Think Tank is slated for April 12 to 14 in Napa, and the agenda is set–to be found here.

Creative agencies have been popping up on the web in mass for nearly a decade. With more information available it’s no wonder we have seen such a rise in freelance talent. Design agencies and personal portfolios have become the modern resume of creative peoples.

In this wonderful gallery I’ve put together 24 examples of web studio portfolios. These layouts showcase some very attractive features which you may take into consideration for your own design. Modal views, responsive grids, jQuery galleries, and a whole bunch of other futuristic concepts make an appearance. And building on the framework of open source means you have dozens of pre-built code projects at your disposal!

How open is OpenStack?

How open is OpenStack? That question is being bandied about following the reported removal of Microsoft’s Hyper-V hypervisor from OpenStack’s platform. A report noted: “HyperV has been unmaintained for several releases now. The unit tests are superficial, we have no way to test it, noone has stepped forward to maintain it, and for a very long time, we’ve not had any reports that it works.” OpenStack, of course is an open source cloud platform backed by many heavy hitters, with Rackspace being one of the primary backers. Was there a deliberate effort to box out Microsoft’s hypervisor?

Mark Collier, OpenStack founder and vice-president of business development and marketing at Rackspace, told The Register that the removal of Hyper-V was:

“…more a bump in the road than an internal decision to move away from it.”

Collier reportedly added:

“They have approached us and asked if could we put our heads together and come up with a plan. We are more than happy to help anybody make their technology part of OpenStack.”

No doubt, Hyper-V will continue to be one of the virtualization choices that those deploying OpenStack as a platform can choose. Increasingly, Microsoft is embracing open platforms and Linux at the server level because the company knows that not doing so can cause customers and potential customers to jump ship.

Years ago, when Microsoft officials labeled open source “a cancer,” the company’s steadfast focus on proprietary software strategies was well-known, but Microsoft has reversed its stance against open source in many important ways. In fact, Microsoft is one of the top contributors to the Linux kernel.

In virtualized cloud environments, multiple operating systems can coexist and provide users with rich application choices. Microsoft has to have its hypervisor on important open source cloud platforms like OpenStack in order to offer customers choice.

Still, the reported removal of Hyper-V from OpenStack sounds like a temporary hiccup. If anything, it underscores the fact that Microsoft now has to pay regular attention to updating its connections to emerging open source platforms.

Florian Effenberger today posted the news that The Document Foundation has officially been incorporated in Germany. He said, “With this legal act, the entity officially came to life and is legally recognized.”

The official document, dated February 16, was received by lawyers on February 17. The Incorporation certificate establishes The Document Foundation as a “rechtsfähige Stiftung des bürgerlichen Rechts.” In a note to editors it is explained that a “Stiftung is a German Foundation established with an endowment and supported by state authorities” while “bürgerlichen Rechts indicates it is a fully independent Foundation with long-term intent and independent finances.”

Michael Schinagl, a lawyer working on the project, said, “The creation of such a Foundation is unique in the history of free software. There are not many, if any, entities that guarantee such strong rights to active contributors. Embedding those into legal language was a tremendous task, but one that was very worthwile. The Foundation and its statutes provide the ideal grounds for a free office ecosystem, including users, developers, marketeers, adopters, service providers and many, many more, and they can serve as an example for other communities with similar goals.”

Or as Thorsten Behrens explains it, “Those who are approved members have inalienable, strong rights, embedded into the statutes. Since we have been aiming to be a German Stiftung, those rights are guaranteed by law, and enforced by the authorities.”

On a related note, Effenberger posted of the Ask LibreOffice support page last Saturday. This portal allows users to ask their LibreOffice questions on a community / social media-like format.

In enterprises as well as small businesses, the Big Data trend --sorting and sifting large data sets with new tools in pursuit of surfacing meaningful angles on stored information--is on the rise.

In enterprises as well as small businesses, the Big Data trend–sorting and sifting large data sets with new tools in pursuit of surfacing meaningful angles on stored information–is on the rise. As we’ve noted, the open source Hadoop project has been one of the big drivers of this trend, and has given rise to commercial companies that offer custom Hadoop distributions, support, training and more (with Cloudera being a prime example).

Hadoop’s unique ability to sift large data sets and glean useful information has given rise to some juicy job opportunities for people with Hadoop skills, but there are too few of them. Now, Hortonworks, a spin-off of Yahoo, is addressing that problem with its newly announced Hortonworks University, which focuses on teaching Hadoop skills.

Hortonworks has recently switched up its top management and the company has sharpened its focus on accelerating the development and usage of Hadoop. Powered by Apache Hadoop, the Hortonworks Data Platform is a value-added Hadoop distribution that is getting noticed.

According to the announcement of Hortonworks University:

“Hortonworks University consists of public, private on-site and live online courses for both developers and administrators. Our courses are role-based and consist of both expert content that leverages Hortonworks deep domain expertise, and hands-on labs that prepares students for the real-world Hadoop scenarios they will face. The labs in particular set Hortonworks apart from other training offerings in the market place. As the creators of much of the Apache Hadoop code, we have an exceptional understanding of the essential Hadoop components. We have spent countless hours applying this expertise to create highly valuable hands-on exercises that enable students to immediately implement what they have learned. We don’t simply ‘inform’ students. We truly ‘enable’ them to be successful.”

Hortonworks officials have predicted that half of the world’s data will be processed by Apache Hadoop within five years. If you’ve been in the market for a job emphasizing your open source skills, training through Hortonworks University, could become very valuable.

You can find a class near you and register here. Promotional discounts and groiup discounts are also currently available. This is worth looking into.
